Advice for Couples
- Make time for each other! Even when you come home exhausted at the end of the day, this is important relationship maintenance: spend at least 4 minutes a day giving your partner your undivided attention. Turn off all screens during this time.
-
Listen! What are your partner's needs? And make sure your needs are heard too.
-
Simple but helpful: Never discuss important matters on an empty stomach. Glucose is the fuel for the brain, which is also needed to keep reflexive negative feelings in check.
-
Thinking about moving in together? If possible, move into a new shared apartment.
-
Focus more on what works in the relationship. Instead of "You always leave the laundry lying around," say "I'm really glad you help me with the kids so I can go to sports on the weekend."
-
Plan regular enjoyable activities together, not just coping with everyday life.
-
Sex is overrated in our society. But don't let it fall by the wayside. Take turns taking the initiative. Schedule time for it.
